with the aim of meeting the growing demand for electricity in the main industrial regions of northern Spain through concessions on the River Ebro. The company was incorporated on 19 July 1901 with a capital of 20 million pesetas (around €120,000).

Hidroeléctrica Española (also known as Hidrola) is established
with the aim of supplying the Madrid and Valencia markets following the transfer by Hidroeléctrica Ibérica of its concessions on the Tagus River and the Salto del Molinar dam on the River Júcar.

Spain and Portugal inaugurate the Ricobayo dam, the first large hydroelectric project in Spain and one of the largest in Europe at the time
