Iberdrola completes its plan to transform Valencia region’s electricity grid damaged by the DANA after investing €100 million
Ignacio Galán, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, presented the results of the il·lumina Plan alongside the president of the Valencian Government, Juanfran Pérez Llorca. The initiative has involved the rehabilitation and improvement of the electricity grid, as well as support for the social recovery of the affected municipalities.
This initiative, promoted by the company to restore, modernise and reinforce the Valencian electricity grid following the damage caused by the DANA, has enabled more than 108,000 smart meters to be restored, around 20 substations to be rehabilitated, 940 transformer substations to be renewed and nearly 460 towers to be rebuilt, placing the region at the forefront of technology. In addition, this work, carried out over almost two years, will be followed by an investment of nearly €2 billion that the company plans to allocate to networks in the autonomous community through to 2031. The il·lumina Plan has also supported the social recovery of the affected municipalities through initiatives in educational centres, public spaces and family support programmes.
The event, held at Iberdrola’s facilities in Torrent — which played a key role during the DANA and in the subsequent work to implement the Plan — brought together institutional representatives, suppliers, customers and Iberdrola employees. During the event, Ignacio Galán reiterated the company’s commitment to developing a robust, modern and intelligent grid that will drive electrification in the Valencia region and create new opportunities for the Valencian economy and society. He also took a few moments to remember those affected by the natural disaster and to thank the professionals at Iberdrola and the partner companies that took part in the development and implementation of the Plan.
As part of its commitment to the Valencia region, Iberdrola has launched several social initiatives as part of its comprehensive response to the DANA. These include the refurbishment of the Agricultural Foremen’s School in Catarroja, the reconstruction of children’s playgrounds and improvements to the facilities at the Rosa Serrano school, as well as electrical upgrades at the Municipal Market. All these initiatives have been developed in collaboration with various government institutions.
This event marking the completion of the il·lumina Plan forms part of the celebrations for Iberdrola’s 125th anniversary, under the 125 years-light programme, and reflects Iberdrola’s close ties with the Valencia region, which have existed since its origins.
